… Mamma las fyrir mig Sólskin og eg sá í því myndirnar af gamla fólkinu á Betel.
Mig langaði til að senda eitthvað í Sólskinssjóðinn til þess að gleðja gömlu börnin, og sagði mömmu minni það.
Hún gaf mér þá ellefu dali í afmælisgjöf – einn dal fyrir hvert ár, því í dag er eg ellefu ára gömul. Eg mátti gera við þetta hvað sem eg vildi, en eg vildi gefa það í Sólskinssjóðinn og sendi þér það. Eg get ekki skrifað íslenzku og verð þess vegna skrifa þetta á ensku, en eg ætla að læra íslenzku.

… My mother read Sólskin to me and I saw in it the pictures of the elderly people at Betel.
I wanted to send something to the Sólskin-fund to make the elderly children happy and said so my mother.
She gave me eleven dollars as a birthday present – one dollar for each year, since today I am eleven years old. I could do with this whatever I wanted, but I wanted to give it to the Sólskin-fund and am sending it to you. I can’t write in Icelandic and thus must write this in English, but I would like to learn Icelandic.
