About this Guide
Welcome to the University of Manitoba’s OER by Discipline Guide. This support resource lists a broad range of open textbooks and open educational resources (OER) organized by academic programs available at the University of Manitoba. OER are teaching, learning, and research resources that, through permissions granted by the copyright holder, allow others to use, distribute, keep, or make changes to them.
This guide was adapted from a guide created at McMaster, created by Joanne Kehoe and Olga Perkovic, and inspired by a similar guide at UOttawa, created by Mélanie Brunet. Both these guides were themselves adapted from the BC Campus OER by Discipline Directory, edited by Lauri M. Aesoph and Josie Gray. We are very thankful for their work, and for their decision to share their content under a CC-BY license, which has allowed us to adapt it for our own institution.
The UM project team adapted this reference resource specifically geared to the UM context. This team was comprised of members of the University of Manitoba Libraries OER Committee members: Janice Winkler, Nicole Askin, Ashley Huot, Asako Yoshida, Kyle Feenstra, and Katrín Níelsdóttir. The team reorganized the content from the McMaster guide to reflect the departmental structure of the University of Manitoba, and then searched for additional resources to add to each chapter. Liaison librarians for each department had an opportunity to review each section.
Most of the descriptions for resources have been taken or adapted from the resources themselves.
Purpose
The version of the guide presented here was developed to primarily highlight quality open textbooks and organize them so that faculty can easily locate resources in their disciplines or subject areas.
To locate materials, users may browse the Contents or use the search box located in the top-right of each page in the online version to locate a specific subject.
We invite you to notify us if you discover a valuable OER within or related to your discipline using this feedback form.
We hope that faculty and instructors will find this guide helpful as they consider the options available for quality open textbooks for their courses.
