About the Book

Dinesh Ramoo; Martha Lally; and Suzanne Valentine-French

This open textbook, Developmental Psychology: A Canadian Perspective, by Dinesh Ramoo at Brandon University is an adaptation of Lifespan Development: A Psychological Perspective by Martha Lally and Suzanne Valentine-French, licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. This version was built from the adoption for PSYC 333 Fundamentals of Lifespan Development by Dr. Erin Barker at Concordia University, Montreal. Erin Barker’s adoption includes H5P activities to which Dinesh Ramoo added further activities. Dinesh Ramoo’s adoption is supported by Campus Manitoba.

Dr. Erin Barker’s version was replicated from the the original version on LibreTexts to Pressbooks. Minor changes were made throughout the book, including:

  • relevant Canadian resources were added;
  • H5P interactive activities were added;
  • formatting of figures and tables was improved (e.g. numbering, positions, captions); and
  • alt-text was added to all images and photos.

Dr. Dinesh Ramoo’s adaptation

  • incorporates information for the Canadian context into each chapter;
  • adds information on Indigenous knowledge;
  • replaces statistics and graphs from the United States with information from Canada;
  • replaces most of the images along with alt-text;
  • adds new H5P interactive activities;
  • rearranges existing H5P activities into relevant parts of each chapter; and
  • includes chapter summaries.

Open textbooks are open educational resources (OER), which are defined as “teaching, learning and research materials in any medium – digital or otherwise – that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions.” [1]

The LibreTexts mission is to unite students, faculty, and scholars in a co-operative effort to develop an easy-to-use online platform for the construction, customization, and dissemination of OER content to reduce the burdens of unreasonable textbook costs to our students and society. The LibreTexts project is a multi-institutional collaborative venture to develop the next generation of open-access texts to improve post-secondary education at all levels of higher learning by developing an Open Access Resource environment. The project currently consists of thirteen independently operating and interconnected libraries that are constantly being optimized by students, faculty, and outside experts to supplant conventional paper-based books. These free textbook alternatives are organized within a central environment that is both vertically (from advance to basic level) and horizontally (across different fields) integrated.
