What is energy? Where does the abundance of energy that people have available today come from? Since the industrial revolution began in the 18th century, humankind have discovered a multitude of energy sources to help power our society. The average life expectancy has been extended and the world’s population has grown, while our use of external energy sources continues to grow even faster. With that, there have been rewards, consequences and challenges along the way.

Refer to the information discussed in the previous Focus section as well as Part V of this text and elaborate on the following focus boxes, solving any problems that appear. Make note of the important role that ‘fossil’ fuels have played and continue to play in meeting our energy demands. In order to determine the best route to meeting our future energy needs, one must understand the benefits and challenges of the processes that are currently in use.
