Book Description

The “Copyright Toolkit for Manitoba Post-Secondary Institutions” aims to equip individuals working in Manitoba’s colleges and universities with an empowering understanding of copyright. Based on but not limited to related law, it will allow readers to make informed decisions regarding copyright as part of established teams in larger institutions, or in organizing and leading collaborators and colleagues at smaller institutions. This resource will clarify the significance of copyright literacy, help readers discern between protected and non-protected works based on the Canada Copyright Act, allow for compliant activities within Canadian copyright law, and suggest proactive ways to engage with copyright at their institutions. In a digital age where copyright issues can be complex and daunting, the toolkit seeks to build capacity in navigating copyright law effectively, and promote ethical and legal usage of the latest formats of materials while safeguarding the creations of readers and those of their institutions. By simplifying the often misunderstood concept of copyright, colleges and universities can take a proactive role in fostering positive copyright understanding among students and staff. The module provides concrete takeaways on essential aspects of copyright literacy such as the legal framework, classroom and research material use, differentiating protected and non-protected works, fair dealing, open access materials, licensed materials, and obtaining permissions to use protected works. The toolkit is the product of a multi-institutional collaboration between professionals in various backgrounds and positions from several Manitoba institutions and organizations, all of whom have at times sought out the information and approach they hope to have provided here. The ultimate goal is to initiate a journey towards building copyright literacy individually and institutionally within the unique landscape of Manitoba’s post-secondary education.
