29 Using YuJa Video with Pressbooks

The YuJa Video Platform is available to faculty, staff, and students at the University of Manitoba. An alternative to commercial systems like YouTube, YuJa can host and stream video files and automatically add captions and provide transcripts. You can login to the system at umanitoba.yuja.com.

To set up a video to be shared in a Pressbooks publication, follow these steps. First, find the video you want to share from your media library, and select the “More” option from the drop-down menu.

This will open up the Media Details screen. From there you can change the copyright and accessibility settings and copy the embed link, as detailed below.

Applying a Creative Commons License

By adjusting the copyright settings on your video, you can set who can view it and how it can be shared. To do so, select first select the “General” link on the left-hand column of the Media Details screen. Next, select “Set Copyright Notice.”

The default copyright notice is set to “Use at the University of Manitoba.” If this setting is not changed, only logged in users in the UM domain will be able to access the video.

YuJa provides a range of copyright settings, including the full set of Creative Commons licenses. Select the one that fits your purposes. For a review of Creative Commons licenses, refer to the OER Starter Kit.

Once you have selected your copyright notice, click “Save” on the dialogue box, and then “Save General” at the bottom right-hand corner of the window.

Accessibility Settings

The YuJa system provides automated captioning for any uploaded videos. To use this feature, and to ensure that closed captioning is available for your video, follow these steps:

Using the Accessibility option, select “Auto Caption” followed by “Send Caption Request.” That will trigger automated captioning to begin. This step typically takes a few minutes or longer, depending on the length of your video.

Once you have selected your have sent the caption request, select “Save Accessibility” at the bottom right-hand corner of the window.

Optionally, once the automatic captioning is complete, you can download the captions or a full transcript of your video. If you want to make changes to captions, download and edit the SRT caption file, then upload the edited version.

Copying the Embed Code

Next, to add your video to Pressbooks, you will need to copy the Embed Code, which will begin and end with an <iframe> tag. Select the Links option, and press the “Copy Embed Code” button.

After that, you will need to adjust the security settings for your video to ensure that it can be viewed by anyone accessing your publication. To do so, select “Security Settings” at the bottom of the window. From there, deselect “Password or Authentication Restriction” and click “Save” to close the dialogue box.

Once you have completed those steps, select “Save Links” at the bottom right-hand corner of the window.

Embedding a Video in Pressbooks

Return to Pressbooks, and open the chapter where you want to include the video. Using the “Text (HTML)” viewer, find the appropriate point in the text and paste the link you copied from YuJa. The inserted code will look something like this:

Here’s an example of how the embedded video will look in your Pressbooks publication:
