Rebecca Molly Hiebert and Emilie Jackson from the Academic Success Centre were awarded a grant from Campus Manitoba in Spring 2022 to create an Open Educational Resource (OER) focused on supporting newcomers in their transition to the college setting. The OER will be an excellent resource for programs to share with new students during their program orientation, for instructors to share with students during coursework, and for student support staff to share with students to help them succeed. The OER covers topics such as Indigenous peoples and Truth and Reconciliation, anti-racism, gender and sexual diversity, and neurodiversity to provide students with information about diverse experiences. It covers topics including goal setting, time management, taking initiative, and academic integrity to prepare students with the study skills needed to succeed in the college setting. It also covers content on communication, note taking, test taking, memory, and group work skills to prepare students for communicating and succeeding academically in the North American college context. The OER contains reflection and H5P interactive activities, as well as images, graphics, and examples.

This textbook begins with a comprehensive review of the major theoretical approaches that shape our understanding of development from conception to death. What is the difference between chronological age and social age? What is the difference between a generation and a life stage? How do differences in life experiences with respect to cultural and economic resources shape development? How do genes and environments interact to influence development? Do people change or remain the same across the life course? The theoretical approaches that address these big picture questions carry through the textbook as themes that guide empirical research on processes of development.

This book introduces you to the basic concepts of developmental psychology from a lifespan perspective. It presents development as a lifelong process that can be understood from physical, cognitive, and psychosocial dimensions. It also incorporates information relevant to the Canadian context with ideas derived from indigenous knowledge and experiences. In each chapter, up-to-date research findings describe and explain biological, psychological, and social development across the life course. Research is presented in an accessible and engaging manner that allows students to situate their own experience within the lifespan view of psychology.
