Reflection on identities

Pause and reflect

Please take a moment to reflect and choose two social identities from the list you explored earlier in the chapter (included again below for reference).

Select identities that feel especially meaningful to you – whether they’ve shaped your experiences, influenced your worldview, or affected how others relate to you.

Then, in a short reflection, consider how these identities may have influenced your perspectives on teaching and learning.

Examples of identity categories recognized in equity work.
Aspects of Social Identity
  • Gender
  • Sexual orientation
  • Age
  • Size/body type
  • Disability
  • Religious affiliation
  • Neurotype (for example, autistic or ADHD)
  • Race
  • Culture/ethnicity
  • National origin
  • Citizenship
  • First language(s)
  • Social class
  • Socio-economic status

In the next chapter, explore intersectionality and social location in your teaching.
