Reflecting on your social location
Pause and reflect
Give some thought to your own social location (or social position) relative to those of the students with whom you work.
- In what ways do your own identities and social location shape the ways in which you can or cannot relate easily to the experiences of some of your students?
- Are there some students to whom you feel a closer connection because they seem more like you?
- How do you believe that this impacts your own approach to education and supporting students?
- Do you believe you are more aware of some students’ challenges because of your similar past or present circumstances?
- Are there students who face barriers to success that are outside your own experience?
