Artificial Intelligence
The use of publicly available work for AI training is a concern for many authors, and the legal landscape around AI training remains unsettled. While there is currently little that can be done to guarantee that texts are not used for AI training, a statement is a good proactive step that authors can take if they would not like their work used by AI systems. For that purpose, the University of Manitoba Copyright Office recommends including the following statement as part of a copyright notice in your publication:
No use for Artificial Intelligence Training: Except as otherwise permitted by any open licensing applied to this work, the author expressly reserves all rights to use of this work for Generative Artificial Intelligence training, the development of machine learning language models, and similar technologies. Where open licensing applies to this work, the author expresses their preference to opt out of the preceding uses.
