READ ME – about this template

Note on pages to remove before publishing

Please note that both this page and the three “For authors only” resource pages are intended to be removed from the final structure of your book. All other sections – from “Navigating This Resource” to the index – are generally recommended for inclusion in the final published version.

Once you have finished reading this page, please delete it from the Front Matter.

Our intention for this resource is to provide a framework of best practices from which you can scaffold out your new OER creation or adaptation.

At Campus Manitoba, we intend to start new projects with a clone of this template. This will make it easier for future projects to align with best practices in postsecondary publishing and to start with a strong base.

A note on customization instructions: Some template pages feature a blue box at the top of the page labeled “Instructions for customization.” Please follow these instructions to customize the page. Once you have completed the customization, be sure to delete the blue instruction box.

This template incorporates both the Pressbooks glossary tool and anchor tags to enhance accessibility and improve organizational formatting.

A note on the glossary: The Pressbooks glossary feature allows you to easily create and manage a list of terms and their definitions in your book. To add a term, follow these simple steps.

  1. In the visual editor, select the word you want to define.
  2. Click the “Insert Glossary Term” button in the visual editor menu bar (Add Glossary Term icon.).
  3. In the pop-up box, type the definition into the textbox labeled “Description” and click “Insert”.

The term and its definition will be automatically added to the glossary page in the back matter of your book. Readers can view the entire glossary in one place, with all terms and definitions listed alphabetically for easy reference.

A note on creating custom internal links using anchors: To add and link an anchor tag to a section in your document, follow these steps.

  1. In the visual editor, place your cursor at the beginning of the section you want to link to.
  2. Next, select the “Anchor” button in the toolbar. The button looks like a small flag and is located on the bottom row, fourth from the left (Add anchor icon.).
  3. Enter a unique name when prompted.
  4. You now have an anchor tag the start of your heading, and should see it appear as a small anchor icon (Anchor icon.).
  5. To link to your new anchor, highlight the text you want to hyperlink.
  6. Select the link tool (Link icon.).
  7. If you know the unique name of your anchor, you can also enter it directly by typing “#” followed by the anchor name, without any spaces. Alternatively, select the gear icon on the link toolbar labeled Link Options and wait for the Insert/edit Link window to appear.
  8. Scroll through the existing posts and anchors in your book and select the anchor you wish to link to.
  9. Click “Add Link”.

We look forward to seeing how this template aids in your OER creation journey.

Best regards,

Campus Manitoba
