A Close Look at the Sea: Art Images and Literary Texts

“Only if we understand, will we care. Only if we care, will we help. Only if we help, shall all be saved!” – Jane Goodall

“In nature nothing exists alone.” – Rachel Carson

“The aim of science is to discover and illuminate truth. And that, I take it, is the aim of literature, whether biography or history.… It seems to me, then, that there can be no separate literature of science.” – Rachel Carson (Retrieved November 11, 2022, https://rachelcarsoncouncil.org/rachel-carson-ocean/)

A Close Look at the Sea explores art images, poems, and texts from literary and non-fiction works. Ecopoetry, marine ecology, and an awareness of the importance of oceans, lakes, and rivers are explored in many creative ways and consider the following questions:

  1. What can we learn about marine life and its precious ecosystems and what can we do to restore marine health?
  2. How central are the seas and the oceans to planetary survival?
  3. How do artists and writers create awareness of the beauty, mystery, and power of marine life? What can we learn from their work that can be applied to our lives today?
  4. Are there “life lessons” to be learned from a closer look at the seas and ocean?
